chainsaw diagnostic
Chainsaw starts but chain won't move
A guided diagnosis for a chainsaw that runs but the chain stays still.

chainsaw
Does the engine run but the chain stay still?
This diagnostic is for a running saw with a dead or stalled chain-drive path.
Before you begin
Shut the equipment down before inspecting it. Never bypass a safety switch, touch energized generator outlets, or inspect a moving blade, chain, auger, or pump.
Common questions
Why does my chainsaw engine run but the chain will not move?
The chain brake may be engaged, the chain may be overtightened or bound in the bar, the bar groove may be packed with debris, or the clutch and drive sprocket may need service.
Can I inspect a chainsaw chain safely?
Only with the engine off, the chain fully stopped, and the spark plug wire disconnected. Wear gloves and never touch or adjust the chain while the engine can start.
When does a chain-drive problem need a repair shop?
Use a shop for a stuck brake mechanism, worn clutch or sprocket, damaged bar, persistent oiling failure, or any chain that moves at idle.
