How Listings Work

Everything you need to know about how shops appear on smallengine.directory β€” for consumers and shop owners alike.

Who runs this site

smallengine.directory is operated by a small independent team β€” not a manufacturer, franchise, or lead-generation broker. We are not paid by shops to rank them higher in the free directory, and placement is not for sale. Shops can optionally claim and upgrade their listing, which is clearly labeled and never changes the factual data we display.

Where our data comes from

Our base list of shops is built from manufacturer authorized-dealer and service-center locators β€” including Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Generac, Toro, and Briggs & Stratton. These are the most reliable signal that a shop actually services a given brand, because the manufacturer has vetted them. We record which brands each shop is authorized for and at what tier (for example, a Husqvarna Crown Dealer versus a general service partner), so the distinction isn't lost.

We then cross-reference each shop against Google Places to attach a current rating, review count, hours, and β€” where available β€” photos. We treat that as supporting reference data, not as the substance of a listing. The value we add is the curation, the brand-authorization context, the equipment filtering, and the repair guidance around each shop, none of which exists on a generic maps result.

How we deduplicate

The same shop often appears across several manufacturer locators under slightly different names and address formats. We run every shop through a deduplication process that normalizes addresses and business-name suffixes, then merges records describing the same physical location β€” keeping the most complete record and combining its brand authorizations. That way a single shop page reflects every brand it's qualified to service rather than splitting into duplicates.

Verification

Google ratings and review counts are sourced from Google Maps and reflect real customer reviews. The "Google reviews verified" badge on a listing means we have confirmed the rating data against the Google Maps record for that business.

Listings marked with a "Last verified" date have been manually reviewed to confirm the business is still operating at that address.

Listing order

Shops are not ranked by payment. On city pages, listings are ordered by Google rating (highest first), with ties broken by review count. This means the most community-validated shops appear at the top.

We do not accept payment for higher placement in search results or category pages. See our affiliate disclosure for full details on how we make money.

Claiming your listing

If you own a shop that appears on this directory, you can claim your listing to:

  • Update your hours, phone number, and address

Removing a listing

If your business has closed or you want your listing removed, please use the "Report outdated information" link on your listing page or contact us directly. We process removal requests within a few business days.

Reporting errors

Hours change, businesses move, and phone numbers get recycled. If you spot outdated information on any listing, click the "Report outdated information" link at the bottom of that shop's page. We review all reports and update listings as quickly as possible.

Adding a missing shop

Know a shop that should be listed but isn't? Send us the details and we'll review it for inclusion. We add new listings on a rolling basis as we verify their information.

How our repair guides are researched

Beyond the directory, we publish original repair guides to help you diagnose a problem before you call a shop β€” common failure causes, realistic cost ranges, when to repair versus replace, and what to ask a technician. They are written for a general audience, reviewed for accuracy against manufacturer service guidance and common field practice, and updated as needed. They are educational and not a substitute for a qualified technician's diagnosis of your specific machine.

Advertising and affiliate disclosure

Some repair guides include affiliate links to parts or products mentioned in the article; if you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link products already relevant to the topic, and affiliate relationships never influence which shops appear in the directory or their order. The site may also display third-party advertising. See our privacy policy for details on advertising, analytics, and data handling.
