Does the engine run and the auger fail to spin when you engage it?

This diagnostic is for a snowblower that starts and runs, but the auger does not move snow.

Before you begin

Shut the equipment down before inspecting it. Never bypass a safety switch, touch energized generator outlets, or inspect a moving blade, chain, auger, or pump.

Common questions

Why does my snowblower run but the auger will not turn?

Broken shear pins are the most common cause. Other likely failures are a stretched engagement cable, broken auger belt, ice blockage, or damaged gearbox.

Can I replace a snowblower shear pin with a normal bolt?

No. Shear pins are designed to break before the gearbox does. A stronger hardware-store bolt can turn a small repair into an expensive gearbox failure.

When should a snowblower auger problem go to a shop?

Use a shop when the gearbox leaks, the impeller or shaft is damaged, the auger remains engaged after releasing the lever, or belt access exceeds your comfort level.
